Department of Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation
On March 7, 2014, the National Center for Global Health and Medicine was accredited as a pancreatic islet isolation, freezing, and transplantation facility. We are currently accepting registrations for patients (recipients) who are candidates for treatment.
Research Topics
Clinical islet transplantation will be performed, and basic research for the development of this therapy will also be pursued.
The following projects are being undertaken.
- Allogeneic pancreatic islet transplantation for unstable type 1 diabetes mellitus (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Autologous islet transplantation for severe chronic pancreatitis (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Clinical Application of Bioartificial Pancreatic Islets (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Analysis and Regulation of Autoimmune Reaction in Islet Transplantation and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Attn: Daisuke Chujo)
- Regeneration and differentiation of insulin-producing cells from nonislet pancreatic cells (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Improvement of islet transplantation and islet regeneration using gene transfer technology in vivo (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Research on regenerative islet transplantation from iPS cells and its clinical application (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
- Diabetes and liver injury models in monkeys and pigs for preclinical studies of cell transplantation (Attn: Masayuki Shimoda)
Dr. Masayuki Shimoda, Daisuke Chujo, and Shinichi Matsumoto (advisors), who have performed clinical islet transplantation at Baylor University in the U.S. and have achieved excellent results, will lead the clinical and research activities of islet transplantation. Committee Chairman) will assume the position of Specially Appointed Assistant to the President (in charge of islet transplantation), and will support and promote clinical practice and research of islet transplantation.
Target.
- Pancreatectomy + autologous islet transplantation for painful chronic pancreatitis
- Allogeneic islet transplantation for unstable type 1 diabetes
The center provides these treatments, which require advanced technology.
